Project

Kiora provides a secure distribution platform for content providers to publish and deliver content to domains where internet bandwidth is inaccessible or sometimes unavailable. I had a chance to create tv & mobile demo apps for Kiora, and this time, I’m working on the Kiora 2.0 Android & iOS mobile apps.

Research

With Kiora devices, people can watch movies and TV shows even when they have no connection to the internet. Whether people are transporting by cars, or using shared transportations like bus, train, and airplanes, they can browse and watch the contents wherever they are. This will be beneficial for areas with insecure to no connection. Parents can help their bored children with kid-friendly content, while they’re stuck in traffic, or they have something to watch for themselves anytime.

With this background in mind, I’ve tested the current Kiora app and started writing down the expectations and problems I found.

Large selection of contents
Features like search, favorite, and download
Kid-friendly content
Parental control for kids
Multiple accounts for family
No restriction on location, types of transportation since it's an offline content delivery app
Being able to pick up from where I left off the next time I open the app

Problems

Very little content
No sign-in
No features like search, favorite, and download
No kids content
Not being able to track where I left off

Then I checked with the PM and engineering team to go over the requirements for the first release of the product. Although there are many useful features we’d like to have, we went for a minimum viable approach and decided to save for the later versions.

Requirements

Sign-in for repeatable users, but allow guest sign in
A place for featured videos
Continue watching on the main screen for users to get back on track whenever they want to
Suggest our pick of contents based on the data (repeated user)
Parental control for kids
A search of a content
Rating of a video
Favorite, or wishlist
Download of videos
Selection of languages for the app, audio, and subtitles
